2021 NAMI ANNUAL REPORT
Hope can feel lofty, aspirational and difficult to define. We see hope as a measurable, active, tangible outcome. In fact, the measure of hope is the thread that connects everything we do.
At NAMI Chicago, our staff reflects the generosity of our donors and the courage of those with lived experience as we work to create positive change in our community.
This year’s annual report is a celebration of the hope you give. As a donor, every dollar you donate is felt, seen and heard by those who need it most.
THE NAMI CHICAGO
RECOVERY MODEL
Equity is essential to every aspect of life that is needed to achieve mental wellness.
Hope transforms.
At NAMI Chicago, we know that the foundation of hope is built upon what it means for all people to be well and maintain their wellness every day.
Our recovery model reflects how health, home, community and purpose are interconnected and centered around equity.
Health
The capacity to make informed, healthy choices that support well-being, such as overcoming or managing one’s disease(s) or symptoms by engaging in effective treatments.
Our Helpline mobilized to answer the call 12,483 times this year, providing a listening ear and connection to the right mental health and other health care resources to 4,398 people. We also created our new Clinical Support program to wrap long-term care and support around people with complex social, behavioral and physical needs, and keep them out of jail and the emergency room.
Home
More than a physical structure, home is a place to live that is affordable, safe and makes us feel supported in our relationships.
Having a safe, stable place to live is essential to mental wellness and a culture of hope. This past year, our clinical and outreach teams helped 410 community members find hope through housing, as they moved into independent living from mental health residential care. We supported Helpline callers to feel safe at home by assisting with food, transportation, and basic needs for individuals and their families.
Equity
The ability to participate in society free from discrimination based on race, religion, gender identity and sexual orientation.
When there is equity in access to resources there will be equity in the ability to be well and have hope. NAMI Chicago advocates for equal access to quality mental health services and the ability for people to navigate complicated systems, and so much more. Our policy team launched a campaign this year to transform the way people with mental health conditions are treated in the court system, and pushed important dialogue and legislation around reimagining the mental health crisis system. Additionally, our training and education team expanded its offerings to reach more people of different ages, backgrounds, and communities.
Community
Healing relationships and networks that support friendship, love and hope are essential reminders that we are not alone.
Meaningful relationships connect us to community and hope. NAMI Chicago expanded our virtual support groups and classes this year, lifting our group participation up to 1,712, more than 4x the previous year. Our recovery team and ambassador facilitators created space for people to share hope with each other, and more than 95% of attendees would recommend the group to others.
Hope mobilizes.
Purpose
The sense of meaning gained from daily activities such as work, education, caretaking and creative expression.
As the pandemic continues, people are identifying their work needs in different ways. The profound impact of the isolation, lack of connection and powerlessness of the COVID-19 health crisis resulted in unique workplace mental health opportunities. Our expanded Workplace Wellness Training program provided awareness and action steps to achieve physical, environmental and emotional wellness while addressing the common issues and pitfalls of stigma, burnout and stress. NAMI Chicago maintains workforce wellness as its primary internal priority thanks to the work of our Personal Experience department.
