1979
The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) is formed as a grassroots advocacy coalition representing families and communities impacted by mental health.
1990
The Americans with Disabilities Act redefines mental health conditions as disabilities, creating opportunities for accommodations for those living with mental health conditions.
2004
The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is founded under the Department of Health and Human Services as a 24/7 toll-free hotline for individuals in crisis.
2008
The Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act is passed to ensure equal insurance coverage for mental health and addiction services.
2010
The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act is passed with key provisions including integration of mental health care with physical care, preventative care, and investment in mental health services.
2019 - Campus Mental Health
Supported by NAMI Chicago and partners, Illinois passed legislation to promote college student mental health at all public colleges and universities in the state.
2020 - 9-8-8 Legislation
Congress passes legislation to create a national three digit number for mental health crisis and suicide prevention. The legislation will increase funding for mental health crisis services.
2021 - Coverage of ACT/CST
Illinois becomes the first state in the country to require private health insurers to cover intensive in-home mental health treatment like Assertive Community Treatment and Community Supported Treatment. NAMI Chicago, along with the Healthy Minds Healthy Lives Coalition drafted and supported the passage of this legislation.
